Both Gallery and Max News Gallery Layout styles have a unique 9-photo panel featured on the home page, arranged in the form of a 3x3 photos square. By default, unless specifically chosen, those photos are picked at random. However, there is a way of picking nine favorite photos you'd like to showcase on your Home Page, or Front Page, as it is referred to on your site.

To set a photo in this square on the front page, you need to make sure it is uploaded somewhere in your site's Gallery.
Navigate to the desired photo in your gallery and click "Edit". Here, you have the option of setting "FrontPage" to Yes or No; this either marks or unmarks this photo for appearing on your site's Home Page. Clicking on "Submit" will save the preferences for this photo.

Mind that the photos are arranged in the box from oldest to newest, so the first photo you selected for appearing in the square will remain in the lowest right corner for as long as it's selected. When unchecked for appearing on the Home Page, next oldest photo will replace it the bottom right position.
Also, remember that only nine photos can appear in the box. Selecting a tenth photo, the first photo will disappear from the box, and the next oldest, or second, will replace it, etc.
