Dear Aaron
Just like not all religions are the same so too are people who consider themselves spiritual not the same. I reject all forms of organized religion because I find it hard, no, make that impossible to believe in such obviously arbitrarily made up stories of angels, demons, gods and other such nonsense that are clearly borne out of ignorance and a need to explain phenomena that humanity was just too underdeveloped to understand properly. In that same vein I find certain aspects of "spirituality", specifically the parts that delve too deep into the supernatural, to be just as nonsensical as organized religion.
All of this notwithstanding I consider myself spiritual because I believe in energy. We are all surrounded by energy and all living creatures exude energy. It is my firm belief that these energies interact with each other and can affect us just as we can affect it. If you want to explain this energy and our interaction with it in a scientific manner (say it is a form of energy or particles that science just can't detect yet, say that some form of, as of yet, undetectable brain waves can affect that energy or those particles etc.) you can. If you want to explain it in some spiritual manner, that's fine too. I honestly can't say which side I would fall on, but whatever approach you take on this subject it would be unfair and plain wrong to equate this belief of mine, one that doesn't call upon any kind of supernatural entity or force, with believing that "one is a goddess just because" or that dancing topless in the forest will somehow magically summon rain.
In conclusion, don't go trashing someones belief based on a single word. Listen to the whole story and then, if you still deem it stupid, trash away.
Also, don't generalize... generalization is the bane of all understanding
