TOPIC: Learning how to tattoo

Learning how to tattoo 4 years 2 months ago #302

I was thinking about career change allot in a past few months.
I'm a designer and I'm just not happy on my commercial oriented, 9-5 job.
For a while now I'm thinking about learning to tattoo. I already have all the artistic skills, but I need all the information I can get about tattoo apprenticeship.
Any ideas?

I would think twice before leaving my job to become a tattoo artist. It takes years to make a living out of that. Learn a new skill, but don't quit your day job.

If you are determined that's the career you really want, then go for it. But as any career change it will require some sacrifices from your part. Like doing apprenticeship after working hours or on weekends, to be prepared for minimal wages in first months, to learn quickly both the craft and how to stand out.
I cannot give you specifics about how to approach studios, but you will certainly be asked to show your work. As you haven't tattooed before you can show your flash designs so I suggest you get down to it pretty soon so you can amass a decent portfolio.
You can find cool articles about becoming a flash artist here - tattooflashart.althemy.com/

I do flashart and design for a few years now, that is what got me wondering about career change. I love tattoos, I look like coloring book :)
I wouldn't just quit my job (but I would love to) and ran off to be a tattoo artist from scratch, I have a cat to feed :)
And I'm willing to carefully dip my toe in the water, not jump in the pool head first :)
Careful by nature, I'm trying to collect all the information I can.

My only concern is that you will be out of job, hungry and on the street... Be careful not to quit your job prematurely.
Are you sure you want to do this?

I'm always worried that artists and other self-employed people will starve. That is why I work for a pay :)
