Yeah, you are completely missing the mark
It's not a specific subgroup called "Elite Goth" or whatever, it's people in the goth community who are being elitist (considered superior by others or by themselves, as in intellect, talent, power, wealth, or position in society).
Something that, like I already mentioned, happens in practically all subcultures, musical or otherwise.

I think it is human nature, to wanna be on top. Just it gets out of hand and in a wrong place for some...

Wherever there are cliches, there will be elitism. And most (if not all) subcultures do tend to stifle originality - no matter how outwardly subversive or avant-garde. That's just the way it is.

The real irony is that snobs - the ones I've met - are most prone to shuffling through different subcultures. Once they get tired of the same old same old, they adopt a radically different image, and again start competing in their aesthetic purity. It's how they compensate for a lack of personality.

Ah all those trying to prove they are "true" , but the question is: to whom?
