So there's this picture on the web listing all the various types of goth styles



Now, I've never been a big goth aficionado so finding out that there is more than three types of goths, which is what I thought for most of my life (You know, the south park trio, the old school traditional goth, the Victorian goth chick and the little emo kid), didn't really surprise me. What did surprise me is how ridiculously far this "categorization" has been taken.

Although I covered some of these in 'Today I learned' video, I could probably go on 15 minute rants about each individual type mentioned here, so I'll just posit a question. Some of you guys are true goths so maybe you can give me an answer. Is mopey goth really a thing?
I think I've already mentioned my stance on steampunk being made into a subcategory of goth so I won't get into that anymore but if you ask me, some of these are just as ridiculous, if not more. I mean, geeky goth, mopey goth... really? Isn't that just interests and moods but with goth slapped on the end of it? I won't even get into shit like faerie goth

I'd like to hear your opinion on these types (and any other peculiar type you might know) and whether you think they should be a legitimate goth style with a category of it's own (or if they are goth at all) or are they just bullshit amalgams of other types of goths and, apparently, random fields of interest/emotions/beliefs.

I think it more defines the other interest of that person and personal style. Like geeky goths: They are primarily goths but geek as well... It is more about the lifestyle than about the music... You are just looking at it from a wrong perspective. For example, in metal subculture, lifestyle is defined by music and sub-genre of metal a person likes (power metal is loved mostly by geeks, black metal mostly by people that are into some other stuff) in goth subculture, pool of music is mostly intertwined and sub-genres of goth are defined by style and other interests.
That is why you have difficulty making sense out of all of this

Sure, you can be a geek and a goth at the same time, but those two are completely different and unrelated things. You can have a romantic soul or be completely nihilistic, but that wouldn't make you a romantic goth or a mopey goth. If you're a big romantic but you dress in victorian garb and listen to Sisters of Mercy, you are a victorian goth that just so happens to have a romantic soul. If you dress more in black leather with metal studs and army cargo pants, listen to industrial but also hate the world and everything in it, you are not a mopey goth, you're a rivethead that just so happens to be a nihilist.
It would be the same as if we made a category of "sporty goths" that encompass all manner of goths as long as they like sports... Do they listen to gothic metal or aggrotech? Doesn't matter! Do they dress like victorians or like cyber goths? Who cares! Do they like sports? Yes? Then they are "sporty" goths!

Sporty goths are a category for themselves
They are called Fitness Goths and they do have distinct look and music. Nike and I think Adidas even designed a special limited edition workout clothes for them

As a tradgoth I despise all others NOT. Actually I love to see that branching. Doesnt have to be a part of my lifestyle becouse its fun, becouse you can allways laugh

Tasteless, cheap subculture that should have died out in the 80's when it started....
