TOPIC: Build a dedicated music computer?

Build a dedicated music computer? 5 months 5 days ago #3123

Hello,

My plan is to use an old CPU (Athlon 1200), motherboard, and copy of Windows XP along with an old video card and a small flat screen monitor. I'm guessing I'll set up a RAID 1 array with a couple of the biggest hard drives I can buy so that I won't lose everything if one crashes (I know copying all the CDs is going to be a monumental pain in the ass!)
I know I can directly copy the CDs to the hard drive with no quality loss, but is there a way to compress them with little or no loss? 500 cds x 650meg? per CD means I would need a couple of 325 gig hard drives for the array and no space for more music, so a little compression would be a nice thing. What about a program for storing/sorting/playing the music? I'd like to be able to set up multiple playlists, as well as random selections, and I'd like to be able to assign one album to multiple categories, and select only certain songs from albums. Is there a music playing program that can link to a data base program?

Any help will be apprecited.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
